Distinguishing between EPS emergency power supply and UPS uninterruptible power supply (Part 2)



  What is an emergency power source?

It is an emergency power source used in important buildings today for power supply and fire safety. It mainly consists of input and output units, charging modules, battery packs, inverters, monitors, output switching devices, and other parts. Widely used in energy-saving power supply, building lighting, road traffic lighting, tunnel lighting, power, industrial and mining enterprises, fire elevators, etc.
  What is UPS power supply?
  UPSUninterruptible power supplyIt is a system equipment that connects batteries (currently many use lead-acid batteries instead of lithium iron phosphate batteries) to the host and converts direct current into mains power through module circuits such as the host inverter. Mainly used to provide stable and uninterrupted power supply to single computers, computer network systems, or other power electronic devices such as solenoid valves, pressure transmitters, etc. When the mains power input is normal, the UPS stabilizes the mains power and supplies it to the load for use. At this time, the UPS is an AC mains power stabilizer, and it also charges the internal battery; When the mains power is interrupted (due to an accident power outage), UPS immediately supplies 220V AC power to the load by inverting the DC energy of the battery through zero switching conversion, maintaining normal operation of the load and protecting the load's software and hardware from damage. UPS equipment usually provides protection against high or low voltage.
  The difference between EPS emergency power supply and UPS power supply
  1、Different applications

  UPSUninterruptible power supplyGenerally used for precision instrument loads (such as computers, servers, and other IT industry equipment), high power supply quality is required, emphasizing requirements such as inverter switching time, output voltage, frequency stability, and purity of output waveform.
  2、The difference in structure between EPS emergency power supply and UPS uninterruptible power supply
  EPSEmergency power supplyThe inverter has a large amount of redundancy, and both the incoming and outgoing cabinets are inside the EPS. The motor load has variable frequency starting. The casing and wires have flame-retardant measures, multiple mutual switching functions, and can be linked with fire protection.
  UPSUninterruptible power supplyThe redundancy of the inverter is relatively small, unrelated to fire protection, does not require flame retardancy, and has no mutual switching function.EPS emergency power supply loads are generally inductive and resistive, capable of carrying equipment such as motors, lighting, fans, water pumps, etc. It is a specialized emergency fire lighting power supply for centralized emergency power supply.UPS uninterruptible power supply load belongs to capacitive load, and the main equipment is usually a computer, mainly used in large data centers to ensure uninterrupted power supply and voltage regulation.
  3、Different functions
  EPSEmergency power supplyUPSUninterruptible power supplyBoth have mains bypass and inverter circuits, and the functional difference is that the EPS emergency power supply has a continuous power supply function, which generally does not require high inverter switching time. Special applications have certain requirements, with multiple outputs and monitoring and detection functions for each output and individual battery. In daily life, emphasis is placed on bypass power supply, and only when there is a power outage in the city, it is converted to inverter power supply, resulting in high energy utilization.UPS power supplies, such as online ones, only have one total output, and generally emphasize their three major functions: (A) stabilizing voltage and frequency; (B) uninterruptible power supply with extremely high switching time requirements; (C) purifying mains power. The daily emphasis is on the dual conversion circuit power supply of rectification/inverter. It is only switched to bypass power supply when the inverter fails or is overloaded, and the energy utilization rate is not high (usually 80% -90%).
