White Paper on Energy Storage Industry Research 2023 Released



      On April 7, 2023, the 11th Energy Storage International Summit and Exhibition (ESIE 2023) jointly sponsored by the China Energy Research Association, the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance and the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was held in Beijing Shougang Exhibition Center.

     At the opening ceremony, Mr. Chen Haisheng, Deputy Director of the Major Science and Technology Tasks Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, delivered a keynote speech and released the 2023 White Paper on Energy Storage Industry Research.The White Paper on Energy Storage Industry Research, as the gold medal research achievement of the alliance, has been continuously released for 13 years. Its content and professionalism have received widespread attention and praise in the industry, and it has been frequently cited as a reference.

     The White Paper witnessed the entire process of China's energy storage industry development from its inception to its large-scale development stage, carrying the original intention of the alliance to spare no effort in promoting the development of the energy storage industry. The 2023 White Paper on Energy Storage Industry Research, released this time, updates and analyzes the scale, typical projects, manufacturer rankings, policies, electricity market rules, standards, investment and financing of the energy storage market in mainstream countries and regions in 2022, and predicts future market development opportunities and scale.

1、 Development status of global energy storage market in 2022

According to incomplete statistics from the Global Energy Storage Project Database of the China Energy Research Association Energy Storage Special Committee/Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance (CNESA), as of the end of 2022, the cumulative installed capacity of power storage projects that have been put into operation worldwide is 237.2GW, with an annual growth rate of 15%. The cumulative installed capacity of pumped storage energy accounts for less than 80% for the first time, a decrease of 6.8 percentage points compared to the same period in 2021; The cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage has reached 45.7GW, nearly twice that of the same period last year, with an annual growth rate of 80%. Lithium ion batteries still dominate, with an annual growth rate of over 85%. Their cumulative installed capacity in new energy storage has increased by 3.5 percentage points compared to the same period in 2021.

      In 2022, the global energy storage market continues to develop rapidly, with a newly added installed capacity of 30.7 GW of power storage projects, a year-on-year increase of 98%. Among them, the newly added operational scale of new energy storage has exceeded 20GW for the first time, reaching 20.4GW, which is twice the same period in 2021. China, Europe, and the United States continue to lead the development of the global energy storage market, accounting for a total of 86% of the global market, up 6 percentage points from the same period in 2021.

     2、 Development status of China's energy storage market in 2022

According to incomplete statistics from CNESA's global energy storage project database, as of the end of 2022, China's cumulative installed capacity of power storage projects has reached 59.8GW, accounting for 25% of the global market size and an annual growth rate of 38%. The cumulative installed capacity of pumped storage also fell below 80% for the first time, a decrease of 8.3 percentage points compared to the same period in 2021; New energy storage continues to develop rapidly, with a cumulative installed capacity exceeding 10GW for the first time, reaching 13.1GW/27.1GWh. The annual growth rate of power scale is 128%, and the annual growth rate of energy scale is 141%.

In 2022, the installed capacity of new power storage projects in China exceeded 15 GW for the first time, reaching 16.5 GW. Among them, the newly added capacity of pumped storage was 9.1 GW, a year-on-year increase of 75%; The newly added scale of new energy storage reached a historic high, reaching 7.3GW/15.9GWh, with a year-on-year increase of 200% in power scale and 280% in energy scale; In new energy storage, lithium-ion batteries occupy an absolute dominant position, with a weight ratio of 97%. In addition, projects with other technological routes such as compressed air energy storage, flow batteries, sodium ion batteries, and flywheels have made breakthroughs in scale, and their application models are gradually increasing.

3、 Prediction of the Development of China's Energy Storage Market

Since 2014, CNESA has been predicting the size of China's energy storage market. In this white paper, CNESA predicts the size and development trend of China's new energy storage market from 2023 to 2027 based on conservative scenarios (defined as situations where policy implementation, cost reduction, technological improvement, and other factors do not meet expectations) and ideal scenarios (defined as situations where provincial energy storage planning goals are successfully achieved).

Prediction method: Based on the global energy storage project database continuously constructed by CNESA for 13 years, combined with project planning information submitted by energy storage equipment manufacturers, integrators, and operators, and also referring to the development plans of new energy storage and new energy in various provinces during the 14th Five Year Plan period, grey prediction models and polynomial regression methods are used for prediction.

1. Accumulated installed capacity predictionIn a conservative scenario, it is expected that the cumulative scale of new energy storage will reach 97.0 GW by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49.3% from 2023 to 2027; In an ideal scenario, it is expected that the cumulative scale of new energy storage will reach 138.4GW by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 60.3% from 2023 to 2027.

2. Prediction of new installed capacity

It is expected that the annual increase in installed energy storage capacity will show a steady upward trend in the next 5 years. In a conservative scenario, the annual average newly added energy storage capacity is 16.8 GW; In an ideal scenario, the annual average newly added energy storage capacity is 25.1GW.
